भण्डासुर-वध की कथा

नाम दो-सौ-पचहत्तर से तीन-सौ-छियानवें। ललिता का अवतार-उद्देश्य।

चौथा खण्ड एक तरह की encoded-कथा है। ललिता के अवतार का मुख्य-उद्देश्य भण्डासुर-नामक राक्षस का वध था। यह कथा देवी-भागवत और ब्रह्माण्ड-पुराण में विस्तार से मिलती है, और सहस्रनाम के इन एक-सौ-बाईस नामों में अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से बैठी है।

भण्डासुर की उत्पत्ति विशेष है। शिव ने जब कामदेव को तीसरी आँख से जलाया, तो उसकी राख से एक भयानक असुर उत्पन्न हुआ, “भण्ड” यानी “जो खाली है”। ब्रह्मा ने उसे एक अनोखा वर दिया, कि वो जिस-शस्त्र से लड़ेगा, उसी शस्त्र की आधी-शक्ति वो प्रतिद्वंद्वी से जीत लेगा। भण्डासुर ने तीनों लोक जीत लिए।

देवताओं ने ललिता का आह्वान किया। ललिता ने अपनी मन्त्रिणी और वाराही के साथ युद्ध किया, और भण्डासुर तथा उसके पुत्रों को मारा। इन नामों में युद्ध के विभिन्न मोड़ encoded हैं, गणेश की उत्पत्ति (कामेश्वर-मुख-आलोक से), विभिन्न शस्त्रों का प्रयोग, और अन्ततः विजय।

भण्डासुर-वध की कथा का सबसे विस्तृत वर्णन ब्रह्माण्ड पुराण के ललितोपाख्यान में है, अध्याय बीस से चालीस तक। कुछ संस्कृत-साहित्य के विद्वान अनुमान करते हैं कि यह आख्यान दसवीं-ग्यारहवीं सदी के क़रीब लिखा गया, क्योंकि उसमें कुछ भाषा-शैली के तत्त्व उस-समय की कथा-शैली से मिलते हैं।

चौथे-खण्ड में भण्डासुर-वध की पौराणिक-कथा सहस्रनाम का दार्शनिक-केन्द्र है। कथा-संक्षेप यह है, कामदेव के भस्म होने के बाद उसकी राख से एक राक्षस उठा, जिसे ‘भण्ड’ नाम मिला, क्योंकि वह ‘भण्डन-योग्य’ था, यानी ज्ञान-शून्य। इसी भण्डासुर को मारने के लिए सब-देव ललिता की उपासना करते हैं।

कथा का मूल-स्रोत ब्रह्माण्ड-पुराण का उत्तर-भाग है, अध्याय बाईस से तीस तक। यह कथा अद्भुत-तरीक़े से ‘दुर्गा-सप्तशती’ की महिषासुर-वध कथा से अलग संरचित है। वहाँ देवी अकेली युद्ध करती हैं, यहाँ उनके साथ श्यामला, वाराही, और मन्त्रिणी-दण्ड-नायिका जैसी सेना-नायिकाएँ हैं। यह बदलाव श्रीविद्या-परम्परा की संगठन-दृष्टि का सूचक है।

श्री-कन्द-स्वामी की प्रसिद्ध-व्याख्या के अनुसार, भण्डासुर ‘अहंकार’ का प्रतीक है, और उसकी मृत्यु अहंकार-नाश की प्रतीकात्मक-कथा है। यह मनोवैज्ञानिक-व्याख्या आधुनिक-काल में जुङ्ग-शैली के विद्वानों जैसे जोसफ कैम्पबेल ने अपनी ‘द हीरो विद ए थाउज़ंड फ़ेसेस’ (1949) में हिन्दू-पुराण-कथाओं पर सामान्यतः लागू की थी।

‘श्री-चक्र-राज-निलया’। श्रीचक्र-राज में निवास करने वाली। श्रीचक्र नौ-त्रिकोणों से बना यन्त्र है, जिसमें चार ऊर्ध्व-मुख (शिव-तत्त्व) और पाँच अधो-मुख (शक्ति-तत्त्व) त्रिकोण परस्पर छेदते हैं। इन-नौ-त्रिकोणों के परस्पर-छेदन से 43 छोटे त्रिकोण बनते हैं, बीच में बिन्दु, जहाँ ललिता का स्थान है। यह यन्त्र-संरचना दसवीं सदी के क़रीब अपना वर्तमान-रूप पायी।

‘लोपा-मुद्रा-अर्चिता’। ऋषि अगस्त्य की पत्नी लोपा-मुद्रा द्वारा पूजित। श्रीविद्या की दो प्रमुख-तर्जें हैं, काम-राज-विद्या (अगस्त्य-परम्परा) और लोपा-मुद्रा-विद्या। लोपा-मुद्रा-क्रम अधिक-शान्त मानी जाती है, और स्वामी निगमानन्द ने उन्नीसवीं सदी के बंगाल में अपनी ‘तान्त्रिक-गुरु’ रचना में इसी क्रम को ‘गृहस्थ-साधक के लिए उपयुक्त’ बताया।
