Chapter 4 · The Shakradi Stuti, the Devi’s Boon · Middle Carita

Mahishasura had fallen, and the seat torn from Indra had come back to him. Then, their bodies thrilling with joy and their necks bowed low, Indra and all the hosts of heaven bent before the Devi, and voice upon voice there rose the hymn that is the most poetry-laden passage of the Devi Mahatmya. Every shloka reaches her from a fresh angle: now beauty, now strength, now compassion, now Shri and Svaha and Svadha, now Medha, Durga, and Gauri, and at the last that prayer for protection from all four directions which is repeated to this day like armor. When the hymn was complete the Devi told them to ask a boon, and the gods passed over heaven and riches alike and asked for one thing only, that whenever they remembered her she keep destroying their calamities.

Mahishasura had fallen. That most valiant, evil-souled asura lay slain, and with him the whole army of the gods’ enemies, all of it brought down by the Devi. So the gods rose to sing, Indra at their head. Joy ran through them until the hair lifted on their arms, and that thrill made their very bodies beautiful. They bent head and neck and shoulder low before her, and out of that reverence their voices rose into praise.

ऋषिरुवाच ।
ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे देव्या इन्द्रपुरोगमाः ।
स्तुतिमारेभिरे कर्तुं निहते महिषासुरे ॥ 1 ॥
शक्रादयः सुरगणा निहते ऽतिवीर्ये तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि सुरारिबले च देव्या ।
तां तुष्टुवुः प्रणतिनम्रशिरोधरांसा वाग्भिः प्रहर्षपुलकोद्गमचारुदेहाः ॥ 2 ॥

The gods said: We bow in faith to Ambika, who spread out this entire world by her own power and who stands as the massed might of every divine host gathered into a single form. All the gods and the great rishis worship her. May she ordain what is good for us. Her matchless majesty and strength not even Ananta the adorable, not Brahma, not Shiva can find words to declare. May that Chandika bend her mind to guarding the whole world and to destroying the fear of every evil thing. She is Shri, good fortune herself, in the houses of those who do good, and Alakshmi, misfortune, in the houses of the wicked; she is the intelligence in discerning hearts, the faith in the good, the modesty in the high-born. To you, who are all of this, we bow. Protect this universe, O Devi.

देवा ऊचुः ।
देव्या यया ततमिदं जगदात्मशक्त्या निःशेषदेवगणशक्तिसमूहमूर्त्या ।
तामम्बिकामखिलदेवमहर्षिपूज्यां भक्त्या नताः स्म विदधातु शुभानि सा नः ॥ 3 ॥
यस्याः प्रभावमतुलं भगवाननन्तो ब्रह्मा हरश्च नहि वक्तुमलं बलं च ।
सा चण्डिकाखिलजगत्परिपालनाय नाशाय चाशुभभयस्य मतिं करोतु ॥ 4 ॥
या श्रीः स्वयं सुकृतिनां भवनेष्वलक्ष्मीः पापात्मनां कृतधियां हृदयेषु बुद्धिः ।
श्रद्धा सतां कुलजनप्रभवस्य लज्जा तां त्वां नताः स्म परिपालय देवि विश्वम् ॥ 5 ॥

Still bowed low, the gods went on. What words can hold this form of yours that no thought can reach, or that boundless valor of yours that destroys the asuras, or the wonders you worked in battle before the massed hosts of gods and asuras alike? You are the cause of all the worlds. The three gunas, the qualities woven through all nature, run through you too, and still no flaw of theirs can touch you or mark you as its own; even Vishnu, Shiva, and the other gods cannot fathom you. You are the ground on which everything rests, and this whole universe is a single portion of you, for you are the unmanifest, the supreme and primal prakriti, the first cause of all.

Victorious Durga stands over the slain Mahishasura; Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the gods offer praise all around.

किं वर्णयाम तव रूपमचिन्त्यमेतत् किं चातिवीर्यमसुरक्षयकारि भूरि ।
किं चाहवेषु चरितानि तवाद्भुतानि सर्वेषु देव्यसुरदेवगणादिकेषु ॥ 6 ॥
हेतुः समस्तजगतां त्रिगुणापि दोषैर्न ज्ञायसे हरिहरादिभिरप्यपारा ।
सर्वाश्रयाखिलमिदं जगदंशभूतमव्याकृता हि परमा प्रकृतिस्त्वमाद्या ॥ 7 ॥

You are Svaha, O Devi, and at the utterance of your name the whole host of gods takes its fill in every yajna, the fire-rite. Through you the ancestors too are satisfied, and so people also call you Svadha, the word that feeds the ancestors. You are the cause of final release, holding a great vow no mind can grasp; sages who long for moksha reach you through practice, their senses reined in, their being fixed on the essence of the tattvas, the true principles of things, every fault burned away, for you are that supreme and blessed Vidya, the knowledge that sets them free. Sound itself is your body. You are the treasury of the flawless verses of the Rig and the Yajur, and of the Samans whose chanting the Udgitha makes lovely. You are the goddess Trayi, the three Vedas in one; and for the being and the welfare of the world you are Varta, the livelihood by which all creatures live, and the remover of their deepest pain.

यस्याः समस्तसुरता समुदीरणेन तृप्तिं प्रयाति सकलेषु मखेषु देवि ।
स्वाहासि वै पितृगणस्य च तृप्तिहेतुरुच्चार्यसे त्वमत एव जनैः स्वधा च ॥ 8 ॥
या मुक्तिहेतुरविचिन्त्यमहाव्रता त्वमभ्यस्यसे सुनियतेन्द्रियतत्त्वसारैः ।
मोक्षार्थिभिर्मुनिभिरस्तसमस्तदोषैर्विद्यासि सा भगवती परमा हि देवि ॥ 9 ॥
शब्दात्मिका सुविमलर्ग्यजुषां निधानमुद्गीथरम्यपदपाठवतां च साम्नाम् ।
देवी त्रयी भगवती भवभावनाय वार्ता च सर्वजगतां परमार्तिहन्त्री ॥ 10 ॥

You are Medha, the mind’s own power, O Devi, who has drawn into herself the essence of every shastra. You are Durga, the boat that ferries souls across this ocean of existence so hard to cross, herself bound to nothing. You are Shri, who has made her one dwelling in the heart of Vishnu, the slayer of Kaitabha. You are Gauri, whose seat is fixed beside Shiva, the god who wears the moon. Think of your face: faintly smiling, spotless, a match for the full moon’s disc, warm with the sheen of the finest gold, a wonder past telling. Mahishasura looked straight at it and, in a blind rush of fury, struck. Stranger still, O Devi, that when he saw that same face turn wrathful, terrible under its knotted brows, glowing like the moon at its rising, Mahisha did not yield up his life at once. For who looks on Death in his anger and lives?

Durga appears amid the flames of a yajna; gods and rishis worship her by pouring offerings into the fire.

मेधासि देवि विदिताखिलशास्त्रसारा दुर्गासि दुर्गभवसागरनौरसङ्गा ।
श्रीः कैटभारिहृदयैककृताधिवासा गौरी त्वमेव शशिमौलिकृतप्रतिष्ठा ॥ 11 ॥
ईषत्सहासममलं परिपूर्णचन्द्र-बिम्बानुकारि कनकोत्तमकान्तिकान्तम् ।
अत्यद्भुतं प्रहृतमात्तरुषा तथापि वक्त्रं विलोक्य सहसा महिषासुरेण ॥ 12 ॥
दृष्ट्वा तु देवि कुपितं भ्रुकुटीकरालमुद्यच्छशाङ्कसदृशच्छवि यन्न सद्यः ।
प्राणान्मुमोच महिषस्तदतीव चित्रं कैर्जीव्यते हि कुपितान्तकदर्शनेन ॥ 13 ॥

Be gracious, O Devi. You are the highest, and you are here for the good of all. Roused to anger, you bring whole clans to nothing in a single moment, and we learned it in this very hour, watching the vast strength of Mahishasura brought down to its setting before you. Those you look on with favor stand honored among their people; wealth is theirs, and glory, and their store of dharma never thins. Happy indeed are the ones whose children and servants and wives live free of trouble, for you, the giver of every rising fortune, keep your pleasure on them. By your grace the man of good deeds performs each rightful act with care, day after day, and passes at the last to heaven. Who else but you, O Devi, gives the fruit of it across all three worlds?

देवि प्रसीद परमा भवती भवाय सद्यो विनाशयसि कोपवती कुलानि ।
विज्ञातमेतदधुनैव यदस्तमेतन्नीतं बलं सुविपुलं महिषासुरस्य ॥ 14 ॥
ते संमता जनपदेषु धनानि तेषां तेषां यशांसि न च सीदति धर्मवर्गः ।
धन्यास्त एव निभृतात्मजभृत्यदारा येषां सदाभ्युदयदा भवती प्रसन्ना ॥ 15 ॥
धर्म्याणि देवि सकलानि सदैव कर्माण्यत्यादृतः प्रतिदिनं सुकृती करोति ।
स्वर्गं प्रयाति च ततो भवतीप्रसादाल्लोकत्रये ऽपि फलदा ननु देवि तेन ॥ 16 ॥

Now came the verse that people still speak in every hour of danger. O Durga, when you are remembered you take away the fear of every living thing; remembered by those at peace in themselves, you give a mind turned toward the highest good. Dispeller of poverty and sorrow and fear, who is there but you whose heart stays soft with the wish to help all? The world comes to happiness once these asuras are slain, and though the sins they piled up might have held them in hell for ages, you reason that if they meet death in battle they will rise to heaven instead, and with that thought you strike your enemies down. Why not burn every asura to ash with a single glance, why send weapons against them at all? For one reason only: that even your foes, made clean by the touch of your weapon in death, may reach the higher worlds. So kind is the intention you keep even toward those who hate you.

दुर्गे स्मृता हरसि भीतिमशेषजन्तोः स्वस्थैः स्मृता मतिमतीव शुभां ददासि ।
दारिद्र्यदुःखभयहारिणि का त्वदन्या सर्वोपकारकरणाय सदार्द्रचित्ता ॥ 17 ॥
एभिर्हतैर्जगदुपैति सुखं तथैते कुर्वन्तु नाम नरकाय चिराय पापम् ।
संग्राममृत्युमधिगम्य दिवं प्रयान्तु मत्वेति नूनमहितान् विनिहंसि देवि ॥ 18 ॥
दृष्ट्वैव किं न भवती प्रकरोति भस्म सर्वासुरानरिषु यत्प्रहिणोषि शस्त्रम् ।
लोकान् प्रयान्तु रिपवो ऽपि हि शस्त्रपूता इत्थं मतिर्भवति तेष्वपि ते ऽतिसाध्वी ॥ 19 ॥

The savage glare off your sword and the pouring light from your spear-point never dissolved the asuras’ eyes, and the reason was this: in that same moment they were gazing on your face, bright as a moon-fragment shedding rays. Your very nature, O Devi, is to still the ways of the wicked; this form of yours is past all thought and has no equal anywhere; your valor destroys even those who had robbed the gods of their strength; and so, even upon your enemies, your mercy shows itself. To what shall we liken this valor of yours, and where is there another form that strikes terror into foes and steals the heart? Mercy in the mind and hardness in battle, O giver of boons, in all three worlds these two are found together in you alone.

खड्गप्रभानिकरविस्फुरणैस्तथोग्रैः शूलाग्रकान्तिनिवहेन दृशो ऽसुराणाम् ।
यन्नागता विलयमंशुमदिन्दुखण्डयोग्याननं तव विलोकयतां तदेतत् ॥ 20 ॥
दुर्वृत्तवृत्तशमनं तव देवि शीलं रूपं तथैतदविचिन्त्यमतुल्यमन्यैः ।
वीर्यं च हन्तृ हृतदेवपराक्रमाणां वैरिष्वपि प्रकटितैव दया त्वयेत्थम् ॥ 21 ॥
केनोपमा भवतु ते ऽस्य पराक्रमस्य रूपं च शत्रुभयकार्यतिहारि कुत्र ।
चित्ते कृपा समरनिष्ठुरता च दृष्टा त्वय्येव देवि वरदे भुवनत्रये ऽपि ॥ 22 ॥

O Devi, by destroying its enemies you have saved this whole triple world, and those same enemies, cut down at the front of the battle, you have sent up to heaven. The fear the frenzied god-haters had planted in us is gone. We bow to you. Then the gods wound their prayer around the four directions like armor. Guard us with your spear, O Devi. Guard us with your sword, O Ambika. Guard us with the clang of your bell and the deep note of your bowstring. Watch over us in the east, O Chandika, and in the west, and in the south; and in the north, O Ishvari, guard us with the wheeling sweep of your spear.

त्रैलोक्यमेतदखिलं रिपुनाशनेन त्रातं त्वया समरमूर्धनि ते ऽपि हत्वा ।
नीता दिवं रिपुगणा भयमप्यपास्तमस्माकमुन्मदसुरारिभवं नमस्ते ॥ 23 ॥
शूलेन पाहि नो देवि पाहि खड्गेन चाम्बिके ।
घण्टास्वनेन नः पाहि चापज्यानिःस्वनेन च ॥ 24 ॥
प्राच्यां रक्ष प्रतीच्यां च चण्डिके रक्ष दक्षिणे ।
भ्रामणेनात्मशूलस्य उत्तरस्यां तथेश्वरि ॥ 25 ॥

Whatever gentle forms of yours move through the three worlds, and whatever forms of sheer terror, with all of them keep us safe, and keep this earth safe. Whatever weapons rest in your soft hands, O Ambika, the sword, the spear, the mace, and the rest, with all of them guard us on every side. So the gods worshipped her, the Devi who upholds the worlds, with divine flowers that had opened in the grove of Nandana, and with perfumes and fragrant unguents.

सौम्यानि यानि रूपाणि त्रैलोक्ये विचरन्ति ते ।
यानि चात्यर्थघोराणि तै रक्षास्मांस्तथा भुवम् ॥ 26 ॥
खड्गशूलगदादीनि यानि चास्त्राणि ते ऽम्बिके ।
करपल्लवसङ्गीनि तैरस्मान् रक्ष सर्वतः ॥ 27 ॥
ऋषिरुवाच ।
एवं स्तुता सुरैर्दिव्यैः कुसुमैर्नन्दनोद्भवैः ।
अर्चिता जगतां धात्री तथा गन्धानुलेपनैः ॥ 28 ॥

Then all the gods censed her with heavenly incense, their devotion in every breath of it, and the Devi, her face gentle with favor, spoke to the whole bowed company. The Devi said: O dwellers of heaven, you have honored us well with these hymns, and we are greatly pleased. Choose. Whatever you desire, we grant it gladly. Nothing is left that we would count too hard to do. Hearing these words of the Devi, the gods gave their answer.

With the battle ended, Durga stands beside the slain Mahishasura; Kali holds a severed head, the gods and rishis bowing.

29 · 30 · 31

भक्त्या समस्तैस्त्रिदशैर्दिव्यैर्धूपैस्तु धूपिता ।
प्राह प्रसादसुमुखी समस्तान् प्रणतान् सुरान् ॥ 29 ॥
देव्युवाच ।
व्रियतां त्रिदशाः सर्वे यदस्मत्तो ऽभिवाञ्छितम् ।
ददाम्यहमतिप्रीत्या स्तवैरेभिः सुपूजिता ॥ 30 ॥
कर्तव्यमपरं यच्च दुष्करं तन्न विद्महे ।
इत्याकर्ण्य वचो देव्याः प्रत्यूचुस्ते दिवौकसः ॥ 31 ॥

The gods said: You, the Blessed One, have done it all; nothing at all remains, for Mahishasura our enemy lies slain. Yet if you would give us a boon, O Maheshvari, give us this alone: that whenever we call you to mind, you put an end to our worst calamities. And you whose face is without stain, toward any mortal who praises you with these same hymns, stay always gracious, O Ambika, and make his wealth and prosperity and splendor grow, with the good fortune of wife and home.

Victorious Durga stands with her lion and the vanquished Mahishasura; her many goddess forms in the sky, the gods bowing below.

देवा ऊचुः ।
भगवत्या कृतं सर्वं न किञ्चिदवशिष्यते ।
यदयं निहतः शत्रुरस्माकं महिषासुरः ॥ 32 ॥
यदि चापि वरो देयस्त्वयास्माकं महेश्वरि ।
संस्मृता संस्मृता त्वं नो हिंसेथाः परमापदः ॥ 33 ॥
यश्च मर्त्यः स्तवैरेभिस्त्वां स्तोष्यत्यमलानने ।
तस्य वित्तर्धिविभवैर्धनदारादिसम्पदाम् ।
वृद्धये ऽस्मत्प्रसन्ना त्वं भवेथाः सर्वदाम्बिके ॥ 34 ॥

The rishi said: So the gods won her favor, O king, praying both for the sake of the world and for their own, and Bhadrakali answered, So be it, and vanished where she stood. This much I have told you, O lord of the earth: how the Devi who wills the good of all three worlds first came into being long ago out of the bodies of the gods. What comes next is how that same Devi took birth again from the body of Gauri, to slay the wicked daityas Shumbha and Nishumbha and to guard the worlds as the helper of the gods. That story too I will now tell you, just as it happened. Listen.

इति प्रसादिता देवैर्जगतोऽर्थे तथाऽत्मनः ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा भद्रकाली बभूवान्तर्हिता नृप ॥ 35 ॥
इत्येतत्कथितं भूप सम्भूता सा यथा पुरा ।
देवी देवशरीरेभ्यो जगत्त्रयहितैषिणी ॥ 36 ॥
पुनश्च गौरीदेहात् सा समुद्भूता यथाभवत् ।
वधाय दुष्टदैत्यानां तथा शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥ 37 ॥
रक्षणाय च लोकानां देवानामुपकारिणी ।
तच्छृणुष्व मयाऽख्यातं यथावत्कथयामि ते ॥ 38 ॥

Ahead

The next chapter opens the Final Carita. Shumbha and Nishumbha have seized Indra’s place, and the gods once again turn to the Devi in the Himalayas with a hymn. That chapter carries the famous stotra beginning “Ya devi sarva-bhuteshu…”, in which the Devi is saluted in every living being as consciousness, as power, as forgiveness, and as peace.
