Chapter 11 · The Narayani Stuti · Final Carita

Shumbha had fallen. The instant the conqueror of Mahishasura went down, the dread drained out of heaven and the faces of the gods lifted and opened like lotuses. Indra and all the suras came forward with Agni at their head and stood before Katyayani with folded hands. Then one voice rose, and the same salutation returned at the close of shloka after shloka, Narayani, salutation to you. Pleased by the hymn, the Devi offered them a boon, and the gods asked nothing for themselves. They asked only that she keep calming every affliction across the three worlds and keep destroying their foes. At the end she told them the story of the descents still to come, from her birth in the house of Nanda the cowherd to her forms as Rakta-dantika, Shakambhari, Bhima, and Bhramari.

Shumbha, the demon who had brought down Mahishasura, lay dead on the field. The gods came down onto that same ground where the war had raged, Indra among them, Agni at their head. Everything they had prayed for through the long fight stood accomplished in front of them, and their faces opened like lotuses, so bright that the very horizons seemed to catch the light. With that gladness rising in them, they lifted their voices and began to praise Katyayani.

After the victory the gods stand with folded hands praising the lion-riding Devi, the corpses of the demons lying on the ground.

ऋषिरुवाच ।
देव्या हते तत्र महासुरेन्द्रे सेन्द्राः सुरा वह्निपुरोगमास्ताम् ।
कात्यायनीं तुष्टुवुरिष्टलाभाद् विकाशिवक्त्राब्जविकाशिताशाः ॥ 1 ॥

Their first words were a plea. O Devi who lifts away the pain of everyone who turns to you, be gracious, be gracious, for you are the mother of the whole world. O ruler of all, be gracious and guard this world, for you alone hold sway over everything that moves and everything that stands still. Even as they begged her to protect creation, they were naming what she already was, the ground on which that creation stood. You alone became the support of the world, they said, because you abide within it as the earth itself. You abide within it as water too, and by you the whole of it is filled and its thirst is answered, O you whose power nothing can cross.

देवा ऊचुः ।
देवि प्रपन्नार्तिहरे प्रसीद प्रसीद मातर्जगतो ऽखिलस्य ।
प्रसीद विश्वेश्वरि पाहि विश्वं त्वमीश्वरी देवि चराचरस्य ॥ 2 ॥
आधारभूता जगतस्त्वमेका महीस्वरूपेण यतः स्थितासि ।
अपां स्वरूपस्थितया त्वयैतद् आप्याय्यते कृत्स्नमलङ्घ्यवीर्ये ॥ 3 ॥

They went on. You are Vishnu’s own energy, the Vaishnavi shakti, boundless in power. You are the seed of the universe and the supreme maya, and this entire world lies spellbound in you. When you are pleased, that same power turns, here on this very earth, into the cause of a soul’s release. Every branch of knowledge is a form of you, O Devi, and every woman in every world is you. When you alone, the one Amba, have filled all that exists, what praise could ever reach you, what utterance could rise higher than the one it means to praise.

Ringed by a halo the Devi sits upon the lion, and the gods with Ganesha all around praise her with folded hands.

त्वं वैष्णवी शक्तिरनन्तवीर्या विश्वस्य बीजं परमासि माया ।
संमोहितं देवि समस्तमेतत् त्वं वै प्रसन्ना भुवि मुक्तिहेतुः ॥ 4 ॥
विद्याः समस्तास्तव देवि भेदाः स्त्रियः समस्ताः सकला जगत्सु ।
त्वयैकया पूरितमम्बयैतत् का ते स्तुतिः स्तव्यपरा परोक्तिः ॥ 5 ॥

You are the form of all that lives, they said, the giver of heaven and of final release alike, so what words could ever be worthy of your praise. And then, still bent low, they arrived at the salutation that would return again and again through everything to come. To Narayani, who abides as intelligence in the heart of every living being, who grants both heaven and release, salutation to you.

Seated with the lion amid clouds, the Devi is flanked by Shiva, Ganesha, and other gods standing with folded hands.

सर्वभूता यदा देवी स्वर्गमुक्तिप्रदायिनी ।
त्वं स्तुता स्तुतये का वा भवन्तु परमोक्तयः ॥ 6 ॥
सर्वस्य बुद्धिरूपेण जनस्य हृदि संस्थिते ।
स्वर्गापवर्गदे देवि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 7 ॥

Now the salutation began to come without a break, and one by one, as they recognized her in form after form, the gods bowed. To Narayani, who as the kala and the kashtha and the finer measures of time drives creation through all its changes, and who at the hour of dissolution holds the power to draw the whole universe back into herself, salutation to you. To Narayani, the good fortune inside everything fortunate, well-being itself, who accomplishes every aim, the refuge of all who seek refuge, the three-eyed Gauri, salutation to you. To Narayani, the one root power behind creation, preservation, and destruction, the eternal, the ground of the three gunas and woven of them, salutation to you. To Narayani, forever bent on rescuing the helpless and the suffering who come to her, who lifts away the pain of every creature, salutation to you.

Enthroned on a mountain peak, the Devi is shown above forests, animals, waterfalls, and the creatures of the ocean.

कलाकाष्ठादिरूपेण परिणामप्रदायिनि ।
विश्वस्योपरतौ शक्ते नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 8 ॥
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके ।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 9 ॥
सृष्टिस्थितिविनाशानां शक्तिभूते सनातनि ।
गुणाश्रये गुणमये नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 10 ॥
शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणे ।
सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 11 ॥

Then they bowed to the shakti-forms that had risen, in this very war, out of the bodies of the gods themselves. To the one who rides the swan-drawn chariot in the form of Brahmani, sprinkling the water made holy by kusha grass, Narayani, salutation to you. To the one who bears the trident, the crescent moon, and the serpent, mounted on the great bull in the form of Maheshvari, Narayani, salutation to you. To the one ringed by peacock and cock, wielding the great weapon, standing flawless in the form of Kaumari, Narayani, salutation to you.

In a star-filled cloudscape the Devi is enthroned with her lion, while veena-bearing sages and gods sit at her feet.

हंसयुक्तविमानस्थे ब्रह्माणीरूपधारिणि ।
कौशाम्भःक्षरिके देवि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 12 ॥
त्रिशूलचन्द्राहिधरे महावृषभवाहिनि ।
माहेश्वरीस्वरूपेण नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 13 ॥
मयूरकुक्कुटवृते महाशक्तिधरे ऽनघे ।
कौमारीरूपसंस्थाने नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 14 ॥

To the one who holds conch and discus and mace and the Sharnga bow, those supreme weapons, appearing in the form of Vaishnavi, be gracious, Narayani, salutation to you. To the one who grips the fierce great discus, who once lifted the drowning earth on her tusk as the boar, gracious now in the form of Varahi, Narayani, salutation to you. To the one who took the terrible man-lion shape as Narasimhi, rising to tear the daityas apart and to shield the three worlds, Narayani, salutation to you.

On her chariot of swans Brahmani sprinkles water with kusha grass, and below the gods stand with folded hands.

शङ्खचक्रगदाशार्ङ्गगृहीतपरमायुधे ।
प्रसीद वैष्णवीरूपे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 15 ॥
गृहीतोग्रमहाचक्रे दंष्ट्रोद्धृतवसुन्धरे ।
वराहरूपिणि शिवे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 16 ॥
नृसिंहरूपेणोग्रेण हन्तुं दैत्यान् कृतोद्यमे ।
त्रैलोक्यत्राणसहिते नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 17 ॥

To the one crowned and bearing the great thunderbolt, blazing with a thousand eyes, who tore the life from Vritra as the power of Indra, in the form of Aindri, Narayani, salutation to you. To the one who made Shiva himself her messenger, who broke the vast strength of the daityas, terrible in form and thunderous in voice, the Shiva-duti, Narayani, salutation to you. To the one whose mouth is jagged with fangs, adorned with a garland of skulls, who ground Chanda and Munda to nothing, Chamunda, Narayani, salutation to you.

Seated on the bull, Maheshvari bears the trident, a serpent at her throat and the crescent moon shining upon her hand.

18 · 19 · 20

किरीटिनि महावज्रे सहस्रनयनोज्ज्वले ।
वृत्रप्राणहरे चैन्द्रि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 18 ॥
शिवदूतीस्वरूपेण हतदैत्यमहाबले ।
घोररूपे महारावे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 19 ॥
दंष्ट्राकरालवदने शिरोमालाविभूषणे ।
चामुण्डे मुण्डमथने नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 20 ॥

Then they gathered all her forms into a single breath and bowed. To Lakshmi, Lajja, Mahavidya, Shraddha, Pushti, Svadha, and Dhruva, to Maharatri and Mahamaya, to Narayani who lives in every one of these, salutation to you. To Medha and Sarasvati, to Vara and Bhuti, to Babhravi and Tamasi and Niyata, be gracious, O Ishvari, Narayani, salutation to you.

Standing with peacock and cock, the Kaumari shakti holds a spear while the gods all around offer praise.

21 · 22

लक्ष्मि लज्जे महाविद्ये श्रद्धे पुष्टे स्वधे ध्रुवे ।
महारात्रे महामाये नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 21 ॥
मेधे सरस्वति वरे भूति बाभ्रवि तामसि ।
नियते त्वं प्रसीदेशे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 22 ॥

Now the hymn changed key, and the vision widened into her cosmic body. Hands and feet on every side, eyes and heads and faces on every side, ears on every side, hearing everything everywhere in the world, O Narayani, salutation to you. You who are the form of all, the ruler of all, holding every power at once, carry us across every fear, O Devi Durga, salutation to you.

Bearing conch, discus, mace, and bow, Vaishnavi stands with the lion as the gods bow before her.

23 · 24

सर्वतः पाणिपादान्ते सर्वतो ऽक्षिशिरोमुखे ।
सर्वतः श्रवणघ्राणे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 23 ॥
सर्वस्वरूपे सर्वेशे सर्वशक्तिसमन्विते ।
भयेभ्यस्त्राहि नो देवि दुर्गे देवि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 24 ॥

Then they turned to her face, to her weapons, and to her bell. May this gentle face of yours, graced with three eyes, keep us safe from every terror, Katyayani, salutation to you. May your trident, fierce as flame and utterly dreadful, the slayer of every asura, carry us past our fear, Bhadrakali, salutation to you. And your bell, which floods the whole world with its sound and drains the fire out of the asuras, may it guard us from our sins the way a mother guards her sons.

Boar-faced Varahi raises her discus and holds the earth upon her palm above the surging waves of the ocean.

25 · 26 · 27

एतत्ते वदनं सौम्यं लोचनत्रयभूषितम् ।
पातु नः सर्वभीतिभ्यः कात्यायनि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 25 ॥
ज्वालाकरालमत्युग्रमशेषासुरसूदनम् ।
त्रिशूलं पातु नो भीतेर्भद्रकालि नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥ 26 ॥
हिनस्ति दैत्यतेजांसि स्वनेनापूर्य या जगत् ।
सा घण्टा पातु नो देवि पापेभ्यो नः सुतानिव ॥ 27 ॥

May the sword in your hand, smeared with the blood and fat of the asuras and still blazing, turn to our good, Chandika, we bow to you. Pleased, you take away every disease. Angered, you still grant your devotees all they long for. No ruin comes near those who shelter in you, and they themselves become a shelter for others.

Lion-faced Narasimhi tears open the chest of a daitya with her claws, the gods standing witness behind her.

28 · 29

असुरासृग्वसापङ्कचर्चितस्ते करोज्ज्वलः ।
शुभाय खड्गो भवतु चण्डिके त्वां नता वयम् ॥ 28 ॥
रोगानशेषानपहंसि तुष्टा रुष्टा तु कामान् सकलानभीष्टान् ।
त्वामाश्रितानां न विपन्नराणां त्वामाश्रिता ह्याश्रयतां प्रयान्ति ॥ 29 ॥

Look at what you have done today, they said, this slaughter of the great asuras who hate all dharma. You took your single self and gave it many shapes to do it. Who else, Ambika, could work such a thing? In the sciences, in the shastras, in the lamps of discernment, in the first words ever spoken, who is there anywhere like you? And it is you again who leaves this whole world stumbling in the dark, down in the pit of that one small word, mine.

Aindri, her arms marked with a thousand eyes, strikes a daitya of the ocean with the lightning of the vajra.

30 · 31

एतत्कृतं यत्कदनं त्वयाद्य धर्मद्विषां देवि महासुराणाम् ।
रूपैरनेकैर्बहुधाऽऽत्ममूर्तिं कृत्वाम्बिके तत्प्रकरोति कान्या ॥ 30 ॥
विद्यासु शास्त्रेषु विवेकदीपेष्व् आद्येषु वाक्येषु च का त्वदन्या ।
ममत्वगर्ते ऽतिमहान्धकारे विभ्रामयत्येतदतीव विश्वम् ॥ 31 ॥

Where there are rakshasas, where there are serpents with burning venom, where enemies close in or robber bands gather, where a forest fire roars, or out in the middle of the sea, there you stand, and there you guard the world. O ruler of all, you keep the world alive. You are the self of the world, and you hold it up. The lords of the worlds bow to you, and those who bend before you in devotion become the refuge of all the world.

In her Shiva-duti form the fierce Devi roars and sends Shiva as her messenger through the sky.

32 · 33

रक्षांसि यत्रोग्रविषाश्च नागा यत्रारयो दस्युबलानि यत्र ।
दावानलो यत्र तथाब्धिमध्ये तत्र स्थिता त्वं परिपासि विश्वम् ॥ 32 ॥
विश्वेश्वरि त्वं परिपासि विश्वं विश्वात्मिका धारयसीति विश्वम् ।
विश्वेशवन्द्या भवती भवन्ति विश्वाश्रया ये त्वयि भक्तिनम्राः ॥ 33 ॥

At the last they tied the prayer back to the day itself. Be gracious, O Devi. Just as the demon fell in a single instant today, guard us always from the terror of our enemies. Quickly still the sins of all the worlds and the great calamities born of upheaval and ruin. O Devi who lifts away the world’s pain, worthy of the worship of all who dwell in the three worlds, be gracious to us who bow before you, and grant your boon to every world.

Wearing a garland of skulls, Kali stands over the demons holding a severed head in one hand and a vessel of blood in the other.

34 · 35

देवि प्रसीद परिपालय नो ऽरिभीतेर् नित्यं यथासुरवधादधुनैव सद्यः ।
पापानि सर्वजगतां प्रशमं नयाशु उत्पातपाकजनितांश्च महोपसर्गान् ॥ 34 ॥
प्रणतानां प्रसीद त्वं देवि विश्वार्तिहारिणि ।
त्रैलोक्यवासिनामीड्ये लोकानां वरदा भव ॥ 35 ॥

Pleased with the hymn, the Devi answered them in her own voice. O gods, I am ready to give. Whatever boon you hold in your hearts for the good of the world, ask it, and I will grant that very thing. And the gods asked nothing for themselves. They asked only this, that she keep calming every affliction of the three worlds exactly as she had, and keep destroying their enemies.

The Devi's vast form, with a thousand faces and arms, pervades the cosmos while the gods bow their heads below.

36 · 37

श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
वरदाहं सुरगणा वरं यन्मनसेच्छथ ।
तं वृणुध्वं प्रयच्छामि जगतामुपकारकम् ॥ 36 ॥
देवा ऊचुः ।
सर्वबाधाप्रशमनं त्रैलोक्यस्याखिलेश्वरि ।
एवमेव त्वया कार्यमस्मद्वैरिविनाशनम् ॥ 37 ॥

Moved by a request that reached for nothing, the Devi began to tell them of the descents still ahead of her. When the twenty-eighth age arrives in this present cycle, the Manvantara of Vaivasvata, she said, two more great asuras will be born, and they too will carry the names Shumbha and Nishumbha. I will take birth then in the house of Nanda the cowherd, from the womb of Yashoda, and from my seat in the Vindhya mountains I will destroy them both. This is the Yogamaya whose story runs alongside the birth of Krishna.

Bearing bell, trident, and sword, the Devi has the severed heads of the demons and the buffalo lying near her feet.

38 · 39

श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
वैवस्वते ऽन्तरे प्राप्ते अष्टाविंशतिमे युगे ।
शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चैवान्यावुत्पत्स्येते महासुरौ ॥ 38 ॥
नन्दगोपगृहे जाता यशोदागर्भसम्भवा ।
ततस्तौ नाशयिष्यामि विन्ध्याचलनिवासिनी ॥ 39 ॥

After that, she said, I will come down to the earth again in a form more savage still, and I will kill the danavas born of the line of Viprachitti. As I devour those fierce ones, my teeth will redden until they look like pomegranate blossoms. From then on the gods in heaven and men on the earth will name me, over and over, Rakta-dantika, the goddess of the red teeth.

Seated on the lion, the Devi opens her palm in the boon-giving gesture as the gods, with Shiva and Ganesha, pray.

40 · 41 · 42

पुनरप्यतिरौद्रेण रूपेण पृथिवीतले ।
अवतीर्य हनिष्यामि वैप्रचित्तांस्तु दानवान् ॥ 40 ॥
भक्षयन्त्याश्च तानुग्रान् वैप्रचित्तान् सुदानवान् ।
रक्ता दन्ता भविष्यन्ति दाडिमीकुसुमोपमाः ॥ 41 ॥
ततो मां देवताः स्वर्गे मर्त्यलोके च मानवाः ।
स्तुवन्तो व्याहरिष्यन्ति सततं रक्तदन्तिकाम् ॥ 42 ॥

Then, she went on, in a hundred-year drought when not a drop of water is left, the sages will praise me, and I will appear on the earth without being born from any womb. I will look upon those sages out of a hundred eyes, and for that men will call me Shatakshi, the hundred-eyed. And until the rains return, I will feed the whole world with the plants and green herbs that grow from my own body, and every life will hang on them.

Above the Devi enthroned, scenes of a happy household family and two demon warriors glimmer in the clouds.

43 · 44 · 45

भूयश्च शतवार्षिक्यामनावृष्ट्यामनम्भसि ।
मुनिभिः संस्तुता भूमौ संभविष्याम्ययोनिजा ॥ 43 ॥
ततः शतेन नेत्राणां निरीक्षिष्यामि यन्मुनीन् ।
कीर्तयिष्यन्ति मनुजाः शताक्षीमिति मां ततः ॥ 44 ॥
ततो ऽहमखिलं लोकमात्मदेहसमुद्भवैः ।
भरिष्यामि सुराः शाकैरावृष्टेः प्राणधारकैः ॥ 45 ॥

From that, she said, I will become known across the earth as Shakambhari, she who nourishes with herbs. In that very place I will kill the great asura named Durgama, and for that my name will ring out as Durga-devi. Later, on the Himalaya, I will take a form of sheer terror to guard the sages, and I will devour the rakshasas that hunt them. The sages will bow low and praise me, and that name too will spread, Bhima-devi, the terrible goddess.

Seated on the lion, the Devi pierces with her spear a demon streaming blood, while the gods offer praise to one side.

46 · 47 · 48

शाकम्भरीति विख्यातिं तदा यास्याम्यहं भुवि ।
तत्रैव च वधिष्यामि दुर्गमाख्यं महासुरम् ।
दुर्गादेवीति विख्यातं तन्मे नाम भविष्यति ॥ 46 ॥
पुनश्चाहं यदा भीमं रूपं कृत्वा हिमाचले ।
रक्षांसि भक्षयिष्यामि मुनीनां त्राणकारणात् ॥ 47 ॥
तदा मां मुनयः सर्वे स्तोष्यन्त्यानम्रमूर्तयः ।
भीमादेवीति विख्यातं तन्मे नाम भविष्यति ॥ 48 ॥

And when an asura named Aruna throws the three worlds into torment, she said, I will take the form of a swarm, a Bhramari body made of countless bees on their six small feet. For the sake of the three worlds I will kill that great asura, and everywhere people will praise me as Bhramari, the goddess of the bees. Then she spoke the promise that would outlast every age. Whenever an affliction rises out of the danavas, she said, I will descend in that very hour and cut the enemies down. It is the same vow that sounds through the Gita in the words yada yada hi dharmasya, that whenever dharma weakens, the divine descends.

On a parched earth the Devi appears as Shakambhari bearing fruits and green plants, and the rishis bow before her.
On snow-covered mountains the Devi stands with her lion, and above, her fierce Bhima form destroys the demons.
In her Bhramari form a vast swarm of countless bees circles around the Devi, and the gods below offer praise.

49 · 50 · 51

यदारुणाख्यस्त्रैलोक्ये महाबाधां करिष्यति ।
तदाहं भ्रामरं रूपं कृत्वासंख्येयषट्पदम् ॥ 49 ॥
त्रैलोक्यस्य हितार्थाय वधिष्यामि महासुरम् ।
भ्रामरीति च मां लोकास्तदा स्तोष्यन्ति सर्वतः ॥ 50 ॥
इत्थं यदा यदा बाधा दानवोत्था भविष्यति ।
तदा तदावतीर्याहं करिष्याम्यरिसंक्षयम् ॥ 51 ॥

Ahead

Chapter 12 is the phala-shruti, the fruit of the hearing. In it the Devi herself tells the fruit of reciting and hearing this Mahatmya, that whoever listens to it with devotion, the Devi protects them in every calamity.
